Voluntary plastic surgery would not be marketable easily without the technique of Before and After Pictures. They build a connection to the surgeon, elevate the bloody craftsmanship to a hurtless level, and create a must-have feeling: We only know how good something is, when we know how bad it was before. In this series I look at the aesthetics of Before and After Pictures as a marketing tool for ‘Mommy Makeover’ – sounds twee, doesn’t it? – and arm lifts. Only in persons where an alienation from one’s own body has taken over, where a certain hostile physical awareness exists, these pictures can create feelings of desire rather than amazement.
