Hi, I’m Uta, a social documentary photographer based in Bremen, Germany. I love to investigate everyday life and the beauty of the ordinary. I love to explore the lived-in-world, our houses and homes, and questions of belonging. I love colours, people, animals, and the material world of objects and things.

About
Uta Beyer

Ever since finishing my studies in Sociology and Political Economics at the University of Cologne, I have lived and worked outside of Germany. The region of my choice was the wider Middle East, where I coordinated projects for various international cooperation organisations for twenty years. It was during this time that I also developed my passion for documentary photography.
Combining my sociological training with a professional degree in photography from the University of the Arts London, I became particularly interested in the private, domestic spaces in different cultures, their collections of artifacts and things, as well as in human relationships with domesticated and edible animals.

For me, the concept of the home is always multi-layered – much more than just a shelter – a composition of an idea, experiences, and the longing for a home we will maybe never find.
Following my MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography, my photographs have been exhibited in galleries, museums, and artists’ talks internationally. I have published two monographs – Korpus 18 and Heimlich – featuring the housing situations of various social groups in Tbilisi, Georgia.
After two decades abroad, I recently moved back to my home town Bremen, Germany. From here I keep photographing, traveling, and exploring people and their places.
