While selfies and self-presentation are essential ingredients and neccessities of social media usage, many people feel uneasy or inhibited showing their faces online. Yet, in particular as most social media are visual media, our faces must be presented, content created, come what may. Showing and – at the same time – hiding faces has therefore become a social media phenomenon, to create privacy in an increasingly public digital world. In this series I examine some strategies and tools of digital face covers used in social media in 2019.
